BIO/ARTIST STATEMENT

Sarah K. Skogland (b. 1978, Trondheim, Norway) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. With over 30 years of experience as a dancer, her background in movement continues to inform her studio practice and approach to form. Her work includes large-scale paintings, trace based work, soft sculpture, ceramics, installation and performance.
Her work has been shown in group exhibitions in NYC and Los Angeles.

I work with painting, performance, soft sculpture, installation, ceramics and repurposed found objects. At the core of my practice is an intrest in the human experience-the tension between the restrictive and the expansive, and human connectedness through the body.

As a former dancer, my practice grew out of a life shaped by movement and from working closely with the body. This physical history evolved into large-scale abstract paintings. While I began in dance, my practice continues today with the same awarness using my own body as a site of confinement and freedom, identity and erasure, memory and transformation, as well as a point of contact and connection.

In recent work, I use pantyhose and soft sculpture to suggest care, protection, expansion and intimacy as a layer that both hides and nurtures. I create sculptures from deconstructed shoes, ceramic fragements of body parts, and repurposed materials that retain traces of human presence. These are presented with large-scale trace paintings that record movement and memory. My work reflects the marks we carry, traces of experience, vulnerability and human connection. The body becomes both an archive and shared language.
